After defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the NBA playoffs, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards took the opportunity to mock those who predicted the Lakers would win the series in five games. Edwards repeatedly referenced the “Lakers in five” meme, a phrase popularized by ESPN analyst Shannon Sharpe, who often concluded his analyses with the rhyme to indicate his belief in the Lakers’ inevitable victory.
Edwards mentioned the phrase multiple times following the Timberwolves’ 103-96 win in Game 5. During a post-game press conference, he highlighted the satisfaction of the win, noting, “They said ‘Lakers in five,’ and the Wolves won in five.” As he left the arena, Edwards delivered his own version of Sharpe’s phrase to fans.
Outside Crypto Arena, Edwards continued his trolling, again using “Lakers in five.” This phrase seemingly served as motivation for Edwards and the Timberwolves throughout the series. After Minnesota’s Game 1 win, Edwards remarked that the Lakers were “supposed to win” and that the Timberwolves were “not supposed to be here.” He maintained this underdog mentality for the remainder of the series.
Edwards’ comments were not meant to disrespect the Lakers but rather those who doubted the Timberwolves. He showed respect to the Lakers in post-game interviews, acknowledging, “We beat the best player in the world, the best player ever,” referring to LeBron James. The two shared a brief embrace after Game 5, with James telling Edwards it was time for him to make the “next step.”
The Timberwolves will face the winner of the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets series. Houston won Game 5 but still trails 3-2. Game 6 is scheduled for Friday. Edwards will have some rest before the next round, giving him time to move on from the “Lakers in five” jokes and focus on the Timberwolves’ upcoming opponent.
